Patient as a Person Foundation (Dutch: Stichting Mens achter de Patiënt, also called MAP) dreams of person-centered health care. We are convinced this starts in education.
Through active participation of patients in education, the foundation aims to secure patient-centeredness and interprofessional collaboration in the education of future generations.
We are looking for you! As someone with experience with healthcare and illness, you know that illness has a big impact. As a patient expert, you can play an important role in the training of future healthcare professionals. Your story can make a difference!
Each year, non-Dutch students also participate in the module. Therefore we are looking for English speaking patients who want to share their experiences with healthcare. Do you have any questions or do you want to apply as a patient expert? Feel free to send us an email: info@mensachterdepatient.nl
Our educational module consists of three different meetings. These are structured as follows:
Meeting 1
During this meeting at the university, the students and patient expert get to know each other. After this personal introduction, the group discusses which competencies and characteristics are attributed to ‘ideal professionals’. At the end of the meeting, groups of four people are formed (three students and one patient expert).
Meeting 2
The small group of four people will meet at a location chosen by the patient expert, During this second meeting, the experiences of the patient expert are the central theme. The patient experts share their stories on how illness has impacted their lives, or the lives of their relatives. Additionally, patients reflect on the positive and/or negative role professionals have played in this process.
Meeting 3
All students and patient experts will meet again at the university. During this last meeting, the learning experience of the student is the central theme. What have they learned? What has transformed the students in their future profession?
Non-Dutch students of the Bachelor programs in European Public Health and International Track in Medicine participate in the module.
Because students from different backgrounds are coupled to a single patient expert, students will not only learn from the patient’s perspective, but also of the other professions’ background.
Hundreds of students were ahead of you! You will receive more information about the MAP-module from your educational institution.

Sjim Romme and Matthijs Bosveld were amazed at how little attention was paid to the impact of illness during their Health Sciences and Medicine courses. Moreover, they were surprised that different healthcare professions do not meet each other during their education. In 2015, this led to the idea of setting up an educational program. In this way they hoped to make the healthcare of the future more people-oriented. In 2017, this idea resulted in a foundation. The students both took a gap year, the foundation grew and the board grew. After their gap year, they took a step back and passed the baton to the supervision of the board.
Person as a Patient Foundation consists of two boards. One board consists of a mix of students and patient experts organized in 7 committees. These committees are busy with the foundation on a daily basis. Every year, 1-2 students take a gap year to fully focus on the foundation in the form of supervision. The second board consists of professionals who advise the other board.
After participation to the module, we asked patient experts and students for their opinion.
8,8/10 agreed with the statement:
“I am glad I participated in the module as a patient expert”
8,5/10 agreed with the statement:
“MAP would be of added value in my study curriculum”
8,6/10 agreed with the statement:
“As a student, MAP made me aware of the need for empathy in healthcare”
